Zuko – The Journey Between Good and Evil

Born the crowned prince of the Fire Nation, Prince Zuko, of Avatar, the Last Airbender, is the antagonist. His sole intent is to capture the Avatar, a twelve year old airbender who will restore peace to the four nations. Though Zuko’s determination makes him appear as evil as his father, Fire Lord Ozai, the prince’s drive is fuelled solely by Ozai’s acceptance. Punished by the fire lord for speaking out against him during a war meeting, Zuko was left with a scarred face and banished from his home with instruction not to return unless he has the Avatar as his hostage. Humiliated and bitter, Zuko and his wise uncle Iroh set off to the other nations in search of the powerful airbender.

Honor is the most important thing to Zuko. At times, capturing the young boy seems an impossible task, but still he remains undaunted. Throughout his travels, he begins to see how cruelly his nation has treated the others and sees the terror of his father’s nature in his malicious younger sister Azula; she plans to destroy Zuko to become the new fire lord once Ozai has passed. With guidance from Uncle Iroh, Zuko begins to question what is right and wrong.

The conflicted prince struggles with his loyalty to please his father while recognizing that the Avatar can set right the damage the Fire Nation has caused. Unlike most villains, an internal battle rages inside Zuko; he is tortured by doing the right thing and what is expected of him. However, his uncle helps him to see that his destiny may be different than what he thought.

Zuko undergoes an internal metamorphosis and becomes finally at peace as the banished prince. But when Azula asks him for help capturing the Avatar, he reverts back to the twisted dedication to his father. With Zuko’s help, the young airbender is struck down by Azula, and the prince and princess return to the Fire Nation. With his father’s forgiveness and his honor restored, Zuko does not feel satisfaction or happiness; he feels more confused than ever.

After looking within himself and discovering hidden truths about his family’s history, Zuko realizes that his uncle was right. His destiny is not to capture the Avatar, but to help him stop his father’s evil deed. Coming full circle, the banished prince becomes the new fire lord, and all nations are at peace once again.
